In 2016, Coatings Consultant, Michael Woessner of Righter Group, Inc. was contacted by Perkins and Will Architects in Boston to provide high performance coating solutions for the new Philips Academy Snyder Center in Andover, MA. The state-of-the-art Snyder Center houses a 200-meter track, 12 squash courts, and multiuse space for a variety of sports and fitness activities. Perkins and Will has worked with the Righter Group and Tnemec Coatings on many projects over the years and were in need of a variety of high performance coatings to address thermal bridging, AESS, overhead metal decking, drywall, and other surfaces. Righter Group and Tnemec Coatings provides many solutions for high performance coating systems in Athletic and Recreation Centers providing corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, light reflectance, and mitigation of thermal bridging all while still looking good for years to come.
For this project, a variety of Tnemec Coatings were used throughout the facility. The AESS utilized the Tnemec Series 394 PerimePrime primer applied in the steel fabricator’s shop. This unique primer can be used for both interior and exterior and is compatible with the fluid applied thermal break, fireproofing and high performance finishes. The Series 971 Aerolon, an advanced generation fluid applied thermal break was used on all steel penetrations on the front and backside of the facility, including the roof top steel dunnage penetrating the roof. The gymnasium utilized the Tnemec Series 1029 Enduratone, HDP High Performance Acrylic coating and the overhead metal decking received the Series 115 Unibond DF, a unique Self-Crosslinking Hydrophobic Acrylic resin. In addition, other materials such as the Series 280 Tneme-Glaze and Series 1081 EnduraShield were used in the bathrooms, locker rooms and other high traffic areas. All materials that were selected were low VOC, low odor and LEED compliant.
In the spring of 2017, Kaloutas Painting Company of Peabody, MA was selected to perform the work. Michael Woessner of Righter Group worked closely with Kaloutas to provide field mock-ups for owner approval prior to job start-up and support throughout the project. The project lasted approximately 6 months and utilized almost 2,000 total gallons of Tnemec materials on the AESS, Overhead Metal Decking and Trusses, Bathrooms, Lockers, and other areas throughout the facility. The Snyder Center officially opened January 5, 2018.
